Joseph H. Koonz, Jr. graduated with honors from Saint Anselm College, Manchester, New Hampshire, in 1956, and from Georgetown University Law Center in 1959, followed by a tour of duty in the United States Marine Corps. He was admitted to the Bar of the District of Columbia in 1960, and is admitted to practice before the Supreme Court of the United States, the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals, and all of the courts of the District of Columbia.
Mr. Koonz is a member of the Association of Trial Lawyers of America, the American Bar Association, and the District of Columbia Bar, where he has served as Chairman of the Workers' Compensation Committee, Chairman of the Negligence Committee, a Member of the Ethics Committee, and Chairman of the Personal Injury, Negligence and Compensation Committee. Mr. Koonz has also been a Member of the Board of Directors of the Council for Court Excellence, and is a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers.
Mr. Koonz frequently lectures on the subjects of tort law and workers' compensation. He has been extremely active in trial practice. Mr. Koonz has served as President of the District of Columbia Trial Lawyers Association, and was named its "Trial Lawyer of the Year" in 1990. Mr. Koonz has also been a guest lecturer in trial practice at Georgetown University Law Center and the Columbia School of Law at Catholic University.
Mr. Koonz has served as a Member of the Board of Regents of Catholic University, Washington, D.C., and Chairman of the Board of Trustees at Saint Anselm College, Manchester, New Hampshire. He has also served on the Board of Directors of Georgetown Preparatory School, Rockville, Maryland, and the Country Day School of the Sacred Heart, Bethesda, Maryland.
Mr. Koonz has been honored for his philanthropic endeavors on behalf of "So Others Might Eat", Providence Hospital, and Friendship House. He has also been a significant fundraiser for a variety of needy charitable organizations in the Washington area. Mr. Koonz has been featured on both the "TODAY" Show and "GOOD MORNING AMERICA" in conjunction with successful trials.
