JAMES W. KING is a partner in Balch & Bingham's Wealth and Business Planning Practice Group. His practice involves counseling clients in all aspects of employee benefits law, including fiduciary aspects of ERISA, qualified pension (both traditional and cash balance plans) and 401(k) profit sharing plans, ESOPs (leveraged and non-leveraged), non-qualified deferred compensation plans, welfare benefit plans, severance plans and deferred compensation arrangements for governmental and not-for-profit organizations. Mr. King also advises clients on all aspects of employee benefit plan issues arising in mergers and acquisitions, from conducting due diligence to integrating employee benefit plans and breaking-up of such plans. He also represents clients in preparing for and managing IRS and DOL audits and correcting plan defects in tax-qualified retirement plans through IRS and DOL voluntary correction programs.
Mr. King received his B.S. in Accounting from the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 1993, and his J.D. from The University of Alabama School of Law, magna cum laude, in 1998. While attending the University of Alabama School of Law, Mr. King earned several academic honors such as being named a Hugo M. Black Scholar, a Dean M. Leigh Harrison Scholar and Order of the Coif. He was also a member of the Alabama Law Review. Prior to entering law school Mr. King worked as a tax consultant for Deloitte & Touche, LLP.
