Jim Karen is a trial lawyer whose practice emphasizes complex corporate and commercial litigation and class actions. He has served as national coordinating counsel in nationwide multidistrict litigation and has tried many cases throughout the United States. He serves as the litigation practice coordinator in the Dallas Office.
Jim has handled a variety of disputes for major corporations, including Airlines Reporting Corporation, Bridgestone/Firestone, EDS, Expedia, Frito-Lay, General Electric, Hotels.com, Hotwire, IBM, KFC, PepsiCo, Pizza Hut, Stanley Works, Texas Instruments, Trammell Crow Company, USAA, Xerox, and Yum! Brands. These disputes have involved corporate governance, antitrust, securities, real estate, banking, regulatory, toxic tort, insurance coverage, construction, trademark and intellectual property, and other issues. Jim currently serves as lead counsel for Expedia in lawsuits around the country relating to the online travel industry's "merchant model." In addition, he recently secured a judgment of $57.5 million, following a three-week trial, for claims relating to the acquisition of a business.
Jim has significant experience in jury and bench trials, injunction matters, and arbitrations. He has tried numerous lawsuits and arbitrations throughout the United States, including approximately 15 jury trials and more than 30 bench trials and arbitrations. In addition, he has handled preliminary injunction hearings, class certification hearings, and state and federal appellate arguments.
