An Equity Member of the firm, Tom practices in the areas of real property law (commercial and residential), real estate development, zoning, foreclosures, estate planning, guardianship, and estate administration. He graduated with Distinction in Accounting at the University of North Carolina at Asheville in 1984. Tom won the J. Nelson Young Tax Scholarship while attending the University of North Carolina School of Law, where he received his Juris Doctor in 1987.
Tom's community leadership roles include serving on the Burlington Parks and Recreation Commission, the UNC-Asheville Alumni Association Board, the Board of Habitat for Humanity, the Board of Hospice, and the Board of Trustees of Saint Paul's United Methodist Church. Tom is also Treasurer and Board Member of United Residential Services, Inc., which operates a subsidized housing project for the elderly. Tom was also among eight lawyers at Wishart Norris Henninger & Pittman chosen by his peers to be recognized as a "2006 and 2007 North Carolina Super Lawyer" in the practice area of Real Estate Transactions.
In addition, Tom has served as Vice President of the Consistory and is currently Chairman of the Endowment Committee at First Reformed United Church of Christ, and he is active as an Affiliate Member of the Burlington-Alamance Board of Realtors and Alamance County Homebuilders. Professionally, he has served as Secretary of the Alamance County Bar Association and as a member of the North Carolina Bar Association's Large Law Firm Committee. He is presently a member of the Council of the Real Property Section of the North Carolina Bar Association and is Chairman of the Section's Ethics Committee. Tom is a member of both the North Carolina Land Title Association and the American Land Title Association. Tom is a also a member of the Construction Law, Elder Law, Estate Planning, and Real Property Sections of the North Carolina Bar Association. Tom is a Certified Public Accountant and is a Board Certified Specialist in Real Property Law Residential, Business, Commercial, and Industrial Transactions. He is also a SBA designated attorney in the SBA 504 Loan Program. He is seeking designation as a CCIM.
