Hugh Jones is a retired partner and was a member of the Corporate Department of WilmerHale. He joined the firm in 1964.
Practice
Mr. Jones concentrated his practice on business, intellectual property and international law. He has extensive experience in the areas of corporate finance, new-venture organization, charitable organizations, joint ventures, commercial and corporate transactions, and international transactions.
Mr. Jones’s corporate and institutional clients included architectural, consulting, investment advisory and other professional service firms; domestic and foreign business corporations; a museum and several other tax-exempt organizations; and a shared-service organization whose members include some of Boston’s major hospitals and educational institutions. He served as independent counsel for governing boards of charitable organizations and as personal advisor and trustee to individual clients.
Mr. Jones served on the firm's Executive Committee, Conflicts and Ethics Committee, Hiring Committee and Public Service Committee.
Professional Activities
Mr. Jones is a trustee of The Art Complex, Inc. and Boston Children's Chorus, Inc., a member of the Visiting Committee for the Northeastern University Law School, and a partner in charge of the WilmerHale charitable partnership with Cathedral High School in Boston's South End. In 2004, he was appointed a clinical instructor at the WilmerHale Legal Services Center of Harvard Law School where, under the supervision of instructors in the Community Enterprise Project, law students provide legal assistance to businesses and entrepreneurs in disadvantaged communities.
Mr. Jones is a fellow of the American Bar Foundation and of the Boston Bar Foundation. After serving as a member of the Governing Council and Executive Committee of the Boston Bar Association, he served as president of the Association from 1995 to 1996. He also served as a trustee of the Boston Bar Foundation from 1996 to 2001. He served as a member of the Executive Committee and as a northeast regional vice chairman of the National Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law from 1997 to June 2003. From 1984 to 1988, Mr. Jones chaired the Steering Committee of the Boston Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights. He remains on the Board of Directors of the National Lawyers' Committee and is a trustee emeritus of the Boston Lawyers' Committee.
Mr. Jones lectured on matters of interest to both charitable and professional corporations, and co-edited a three-volume work entitled Massachusetts Business Lawyering, published in 1991 by Massachusetts Continuing Legal Education, Inc.
From 1989 to 1999, Mr. Jones served on the Advisory Committee on Public Charities for the attorney general of Massachusetts. He was a member of the Massachusetts Governor’s Advisory Committee on Corrections under Governors Sargent, King and Dukakis. Mr. Jones is a former trustee of the Belmont Hill School; Justice Resource Institute, Inc.; Massachusetts Continuing Legal Education, Inc.; Massachusetts Half-Way Houses, Inc. and the New England-Canada Business Council of the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce.
