Charles R. Sonnier, a native of Abbeville, began his law career in 1963 with J.E. Kibbe, former Abbeville Mayor and highly respected Louisiana legal figure for more than sixty years. Sonnier went on to become First Assistant District Attorney for the 15th Judicial District, an Abbeville City Attorney, and founding member of The Sonnier Firm.
As a member of the Young Lawyers Section, Louisiana State Bar Association, he served as State Chairman, as 7th Congressional District Delegate, and was the recipient of the Louisiana Bar Outstanding Young Lawyer’s Award in 1975.
He is a current member of the Louisiana State Bar Association, having served on numerous committees and as a former member of its House of Delegates.
Other legal organization memberships in which Sonnier is/was active include: American Bar Association, 15th Judicial District (past President), Vermilion Parish Bar Association (past President), Louisiana State Law Institute, Louisiana Association of Defense Counsel, Louisiana Trial Lawyers Association, Defense Research Institute and the Association of Trial Lawyers of America.
Active in civic, political, religious and legal organizations, Sonnier is also known as a raconteur and is frequently called upon to serve as a master of ceremonies.
He served as President of Abbeville Chamber of Commerce and Kiwanis Club and as past President of the Board of Trustees of the University of Louisiana at Lafayette Foundation where he served as a director for 28 years.
An avid sportsman, Sonnier is a past President of Louisiana Ducks Unlimited and for many years has served as a National Trustee and Ducks Unlimited Regional Vice President for the Southwest Mississippi Flyway.
Sonnier received his Bachelor of Arts in history from the University of Southwestern Louisiana (Now University of Louisiana at Lafayette) and his law degree from Tulane Law School. He was admitted to the bar in 1963.
He specialized in trial litigation involving both personal injury and insurance defense as well as probate law and real estate transactions. During his practice, Sonnier has been involved in two cases which were argued before the U.S. Supreme Court.
Sonnier has been admitted to practice in all state courts, federal courts in Louisiana, U.S. Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals and the U.S. Supreme Court.
