Jackson, Steve M

Margaret Williams Smith is a counsel in the firm's Litigation/Controversy and Securities Departments,  a member of the Investigations and Criminal Litigation and Securities Litigation and Enforcement Practice Groups and a member of the Business Trial Group. She joined the firm in 2006.

Practice

Ms. Smith’s practice focuses on representation of institutional and individual clients in securities enforcement matters, white-collar criminal cases and internal investigations. She has experience representing clients under investigation by the Securities and Exchange Commission, the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board, self-regulatory organizations, and in other parallel civil litigation, regulatory and criminal proceedings.

Prior to joining the firm, Ms. Smith clerked for the Honorable Richard W. Roberts of the United States District Court for the District of Columbia.

Recent Highlights

• Represented auditor in successful motion to dismiss in securities class action. (In re Arthrocare Corp. Securities Litigation, 1:08-cv-00574-SS (W.D. Tex. 2010))
• Represented executive in SEC investigation into the disruption of the Auction Rate Securities market.
• Represented broker-dealer in FINRA investigation into mismarking of options positions.
• Represented insurance company and its current and former employees as witnesses in white-collar criminal trial.
• Represented pharmaceutical company in internal investigation to determine off-label promotional issues.

Ms. Smith is admitted to practice before the US District Court for the District of Columbia.
