Richard Shordt is an associate in the Litigation/Controversy Department. He joined the firm in 2011.
Past Experience
Mr. Shordt joins the firm with nine years of experience as a Congressional staff member. Most recently, he worked as legislative aide to US Representative Chellie Pingree where he formulated financial services, transportation and telecommunications policies for Maine’s First Congressional District.
Prior to beginning his legal education, Mr. Shordt served as legislative director to US Representative Marcy Kaptur. His responsibilities included developing policy initiatives, serving as appropriations associate for the congresswoman’s position on the defense subcommittee, drafting speeches, talking points and press releases and directing legislative staff in authorization priorities for Ohio’s Ninth Congressional District.
While in law school at George Washington University, Mr. Shordt completed a legal internship with the Department of Justice Asset Forfeiture and Money Laundering Section in the Criminal Division. There he conducted background research related to an ongoing money laundering investigation, prepared legal memoranda on issues of privilege and self-incrimination, and helped draft legal publications and training memorandum for educational use by attorneys and investigative personnel.
Mr. Shordt also worked as a judicial intern for the Honorable T.S. Ellis, III of the US District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, researching several types of law, preparing bench memoranda for the judge’s use in motion hearings and drafting case summaries.
