Joe Hatina focuses his practice on the representation of private equity funds, emerging growth companies, and entrepreneurs. He has extensive experience in leveraged buyout/venture capital transactions, financial and corporate restructurings, debt and equity financings, mergers and acquisitions, and general corporate counseling. In addition, Joe advises biotechnology and emerging growth companies on securing and protecting intellectual property rights, forming joint ventures and strategic alliances, engaging in technology transfer and commercialization of intellectual property activities, and drafting and developing comprehensive business plans. Joe also advises clients on matters relating to the regulation of political activity and compliance issues under the Federal Election Campaign Act.
His clients have included AlphaMicron Inc., Arbor Partners, Athersys Inc., Blue Chip Venture Company, Draper Triangle Ventures, Early Stage Partners, Foxconn, Francisco Partners, Industrial Growth Partners, JumpStart, Kirtland Capital Partners, Morgenthaler Partners, Primus Venture Partners, The Research Institute at University Hospitals of Cleveland, The Riverside Company, and spin-out companies from several universities and hospitals.
Before joining Jones Day, Joe was a research scientist in the cancer biology and molecular cardiology departments of The Cleveland Clinic Foundation's Lerner Research Institute. His knowledge of molecular biology, immunology, biochemistry, and cell biology have been useful in his intellectual property work with biotechnology clients.
Joe is a member of the Ohio State Bar Association, the Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Association, and the Cleveland Bridge Builders Class of 2005. Joe also acts as pro bono counsel to Minds Matter of Cleveland, a not-for-profit organization that helps broaden academic opportunities for high-achieving high school students from low-income families.
