Heidi Sachs has been practicing domestic and international trademark law, as well as copyright and other areas of intellectual property law, at Perkins Coie for more than 20 years. She has chaired or co-chaired the Trademark and Intellectual Property practice group since its inception.
She has experience working with companies of all sizes and industries on trademark, copyright, domain name, right of publicity, IP due diligence and trade secret issues. Heidi's clients range from emerging companies to Fortune 500 and other public companies. She has numerous clients in the software, Internet content, aerospace, telecommunication, energy and power, clothing and retail, hospitality, manufacturing, medical equipment, and pharmaceuticals industries.
Heidi is well-known for her practical, strategic and economical approach to consolidating, streamlining and strengthening world-wide trademark portfolios. When one of the three, largest wireless telecommunications companies spun off from its parent, Heidi was chosen to handle this international trademark portfolio. Initially, under an extremely tight time-frame, over 100 marks were searched, and subsequently, dozens of new marks were filed in more than 60 countries.
Heidi has registered copyrights in software, databases, Web sites, teaching and training materials, books and logos. She counsels and assists clients in acquiring copyrights from independent contractors and third parties, and had drafted copyright policies for public and private companies.
Domain name rights have always been critically important for the largest, worldwide, online retail company. Heidi helped develop the strategy and implementation of a domain name registration policy and defense plan that was on the cutting edge of the developing law. Even before the Uniform Domain Name Protection Act, Heidi helped companies execute a proactive, and when necessary aggressive, strategy with domain name cyber squatters.
Heidi assisted in drafting and revising Washington State's Rights of Publicity statute before it was passed by the legislature. She counsels clients regarding the use of photographs or personal information of employees and members of the public in advertisements, training manuals, videos, Web sites and other media.
Heidi has provided strategic input on Purchase and Sale Agreements and performed IP due diligence in clients' acquisitions of domestic and international technology companies, Internet content companies and financial services companies. In addition, she has assisted sellers of significant software companies and clothing and apparel companies in the preparation of IP schedules and the drafting of IP provisions for Purchase and Sale Agreements.
Heidi was on the litigation team that won the first trade secret case under Washington's statute for the largest aircraft manufacturing company. She wrote a chapter on trade secrets in a Matthew Bender treatise.
