Brett M. Halsey specializes in commercial litigation, business litigation, and appeals. Prior to joining the firm, Mr. Halsey was a partner at Tew Cardenas LLP, where he prosecuted and defended all manner of complex commercial disputes including legal and accounting malpractice cases, general breach of contract disputes, business torts claims, securities fraud claims and complex construction disputes. These representations included prosecuting and defending construction and lien disputes on behalf of the Miami-Dade County School Board and Fisher Island Holdings, defending a $200 million claim by a bankrupt corporation involved in Ponzi scheme, and recovering of $47.7 million from the Republic of Cuba on behalf of the family of terrorist victim through the Terrorism Risk Insurance Act.
Mr. Halsey's business litigation experience includes pre-suit dispute resolution, drafting of pleadings and preliminary motion practice, discovery, dispositive motion practice, alternative dispute resolution, trial preparation, trial, post-trial motion practice, enforcement of judgments, and appeals. Mr. Halsey also has experience in securities litigation, land use and corporate matters.
Mr. Halsey received the 2007 Most Effective Lawyer award in International Law from the Daily Business Review for his work on the matter against the Republic of Cuba. He is a member of the Dade County Bar Association and currently serves as an adjunct professor at University of Miami School of Law teaching a course in Business Litigation Skills.
Mr. Halsey is a member of the Florida Bar and is admitted to practice before the United States District Courts for the Southern and Middle Districts of Florida. He received his Juris Doctor, cum laude, from the University of Miami School of Law in 1999 and earned his Bachelor of Arts degree, cum laude, in Business Management and Marketing from Cornell University in 1993, where he was an ambassador for his college.
