MATTHEW M. HAGERTY received his Bachelor of Arts in Political Science Pre-Law, with High Honor, from Michigan State University in 1999. In 2003, he earned his Juris Doctor from the Michigan State University College of Law where he was the recipient of the Jurisprudence Achievement Award for Estate Planning Seminar. During law school, Mr. Hagerty completed an externship with the Brighton City Attorney and continued to serve as law clerk with the Law Office of Paul E. Burns (formerly Brennan & Burns) in Brighton, Michigan from 2000 to 2003.
Prior to joining Myers & Myers, PLLC, he was an Associate Attorney with the Law Office of Paul E. Burns from 2003-2010. During this time, Mr. Hagerty devoted a portion of his practice to municipal law, having served as an assistant city attorney for the City of Brighton, assistant township attorney for the Township of Northfield in Washtenaw County, Putnam Township in Livingston County, and associate counsel for the Livingston County Road Commission. His working knowledge of municipal law and government procedures assists clients in navigating the complexities of zoning and land use applications, tax appeals and other administrative hearings before various boards and commissions.
In addition to his work for public sector government clients, Mr. Hagerty has extensive experience in the private sector having successfully represented individuals, small businesses, corporations, builders, homeowners, private associations and real estate developers in a wide variety of legal matters. His experience includes complex civil litigation in the Washtenaw, Wayne, Livingston, Ingham and Oakland County District and Circuit Courts; litigation in the Michigan Tax Tribunal; mediation and arbitration through the American Arbitration Association; and appellate work in the Michigan Court of Appeals.
