Robert J. Frank was born in Ankara Turkey in 1965. His father was a U.S. Navy Chief and his mother a floral designer. Mr. Frank grew up in Colorado Springs, Colorado and graduated from Doherty High School in 1983. He graduated Cum Laude from Cornell College in Mount Vernon Iowa in 1987. Mr. Frank received his Doctorate of Jurisprudence in 1990, graduating “With Distinction” from the University of Iowa College of Law. While at the University of Iowa Mr. Frank was honored to have been chosen as a member, and later, as Associate Editor of the Iowa Law Review. While at Iowa Mr. Frank was a member of the Moot-Court Board, was a finalist in the Appellate Advocacy II Competition, was Vice President of the Federalist Society for Law and Public Policy and was an active member of the Phi Delta Phi legal fraternity.
Robert J. Frank has been licensed to practice in the federal and state courts of Colorado continuously since 1990. Mr. Frank has been licensed to practice in the federal and state courts of West Virginia continuously since 2008. Mr. Frank has been licensed to practice before the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals since 2008. Additionally, Mr. Frank has been granted permission to appear in other states on a special basis to assist in the litigation of complex cases. These jurisdictions include:
Mr. Frank is a member of the American Association for Justice, West Virginia Association for Justice and the Colorado Trial Lawyers Association. He is a memver of the American Bar Association, Colorado Bar Association, El Paso County Bar Association, and West Virginia bar.
In 1993-1994 Mr. Frank served as the President of the El Paso County Bar Association’s Young Lawyers Committee and was a member of the Colorado State Young Lawyers Board of Directors. Mr. Frank has a long history of service to the bar including: member of the 100 Hours Club for donating 300 hours of pro-bono legal services, Secretary of the El Paso County Bar Association (1995-96), President of Colorado Christmas in January Inc., Member of the El Paso County Fee Dispute Committee, Secretary of The Fatherhood Foundation Inc. and Honorary Co-Chairman of the Business Advisory Counsel.
In 1994 Mr. Frank was awarded the Brian S. Gardner Outstanding Young Lawyer Award. In 2000 Mr. Frank was awarded the National Leadership Award by the National Republican Congressional Committee. In 2007 Robert J. Frank was named as a “Colorado Super Lawyer” an award given to the top 5% of attorneys in the state of Colorado based on peer review.
Robert J. Frank has published numerous practical and scholarly legal articles and teaches continuing education seminars for lawyers and paralegals. A national publication has referred to Robert Frank as “a nationally renowned trial lawyer... whose cases are among the most watched in the nation.” Sullivan, R., Labyrinth. Mr. Frank has been referred to by media as a “skilled legal technician.” Rolling Stone, Issue 989, December 15, 2005, p. 126. Mr. Frank was co-counsel on Bonicelli v. Estate of Bonicelli, the largest wrongful death award in the state of Colorado ($32.4 million). Mr. Frank was lead co-counsel on The Estate of Wallace et.al. v. City of Los Angeles, one of the nation’s largest civil rights cases.
Mr. Frank has successfully represented individual and corporate clients in complex civil litigation and appeals against the nation’s largest and most powerful law firms and governmental institutions. Mr. Frank has successfully represented clients in state trial courts, state appellate court, federal district courts, and federal courts of appeal.
Mr. Frank’s practice emphasizes representing clients in federal and state appellate and trial courts on matters involving complex civil litigation including: serious bodily injury and death; motorcycle litigation; civil rights; complex domestic matters implicating First and Fourteenth Amendment rights; and complex business litigation.
