Fitch, Casey

Charles Perry's practice focuses on a wide range of environmental matters, including defense of administrative enforcement actions, litigation (including toxic tort cases), and advisory services related to business transactions.

Charles's environmental law career began in the 1970s as an assistant U.S. attorney representing the United States Environmental Protection Agency and the Army Corps of Engineers. His career continued in government service through the 1980s when he served as regional counsel for the U.S. EPA Region IV, which serves the eight southeastern states. Charles has been in private practice now for more than 20 years.

In the course of his career, he has been involved in a variety of matters dealing with environmental statutes. Most recently, he was lead counsel in defending a major waste management company in the attempted closure of one of the largest municipal landfills in the state of Georgia. He also has been involved in numerous actions under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, defending civil and criminal matters, and in matters under the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act, where he has served as common counsel for one of the largest Superfund sites in the Southeast.

Charles has been involved in water quality standards issues under the Clean Water Act as well as in defense of enforcement actions brought by both citizens groups and governmental agencies. Currently, Charles is lead counsel in the Clean Air Act defense of an enforcement action being undertaken in the Midwest under the PSD and NSPS "look back" initiative.

In the area of business transactions, Charles has been involved in due diligence assessments and negotiations of multimillion dollar cross-border transactions. He was also a cofounder of an insurance company offering one of the first environmental transactional products in the early 1990s.

Charles lectures regularly before various organizations, including the State Bar of Georgia Environmental Section. He has been selected as one of "America's Leading Lawyers in Business" by Chambers USA (2006) and is listed in Georgia Super Lawyers (2007) and Who's Who Legal (2007).
