James M. O’Reilly is the founder and past president of the Nevada State Bar Section on Elder Law and has the distinction of being the first Certified Elder Law Attorney in Nevada. He has limited his practice to serving the specialized needs of Nevada’s elderly and disabled. He works exclusively on long-term care/Medicaid asset protection planning, guardianships, special needs trusts, income reduction trusts (Miller trusts), estate planning and probate.
Mr. O’Reilly is a graduate of the University of California-Davis, and he then went on to obtain his Juris Doctorate from the University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law in 1975. He was admitted to the California Bar in 1975 and the Nevada Bar in 1976.
Mr. O’Reilly is a regular speaker on elder law topics for the Nevada State Bar continuing legal education programs and an active member of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys and the Special Needs Alliance (SNA). The SNA is a national non-profit organization of attorneys dedicated to disability and public benefits law. Membership in the SNA is by invitation-only, and is based upon a combination of legal expertise in disability and elder law, direct family experiences with disabilities, active participation in disability advocacy and national reputation.
Mr. O’Reilly maintains an active involvement in the legal world and the community as they relate to the practice of disability and elder law. His commitment to assisting his clients, senior citizens and the disabled is reflected in his professional activities, public appearances, and published articles, including “Solutions for Seniors” newsletter, a quarterly publication received by more than 7,000 Nevada families and local government agencies.
Mr. O’Reilly founded his practice in 1975 to help the elderly and disabled maintain their independence, autonomy and dignity. In 2010, he merged his firm with Jeffrey Burr, LTD.
