Mr. Dunbar is Counsel in the Reinsurance Group and a member of the Commercial Litigation Department. He has represented insurance, reinsurance and corporate clients in the U.S., UK, Bermuda and Europe on international, national and New York matters for nearly 18 years. He has defended clients in federal and state cases, arbitration, administrative and regulatory matters in New York and other states. His dispute work has related to a wide variety of subject areas, including insurance, reinsurance, bad faith, professional liability, employment and trade secret law, environmental law and transportation. Mr. Dunbar has also counseled both U.S. and foreign reinsurers, insurers and syndicates on all aspects of insurance and reinsurance law, including proposed reinsurance and insurance transactions, with a particular emphasis on U.S. property and casualty matters. He has a strong, practical understanding of the U.S., Bermuda and London insurance and reinsurance markets gained as both an outside and inside lawyer. More recently, he has developed a specialized practice in Canadian and Latin American insurance and reinsurance markets. He has also advised clients on U.S. legislative and regulatory matters, including representation of client interests in industry groups.
Before joining White and Williams, Mr. Dunbar was the assistant general counsel for a group of global insurance and reinsurance companies of Aspen, a NYSE listed holding company domiciled in Bermuda. As part of a global legal team, he counseled the U.S. based insurance and reinsurance platforms as well as Canada and Latin America. Among many responsibilities, he managed U.S. insurance, reinsurance and other litigation matters, including major disputes, bad faith and insurance and reinsurance coverage matters. Mr. Dunbar also handled a wide range of corporate, transactional (including reinsurance wordings), regulatory and compliance matters. He also served on executive committees, including those relating to claims and the global insurance and US business.
Before attending law school, Mr. Dunbar conducted economic and financial diplomacy for the United States in Europe and the Middle East on behalf of the Office of the Assistant Secretary for International Affairs of the United States Department of the Treasury. This experience helped to shape his early interest in international legal matters.
Mr. Dunbar earned his J.D. from Emory University School of Law and his B.A. in International Studies from American University's School of International Service. He is licensed to practice in New York State and is admitted to appear before the U.S. District Court for the Eastern and Southern Districts of New York.
