Tom Gillespie has more than 30 years of experience practicing in New York, London, and Dallas, representing lenders and borrowers in a wide variety of complex domestic and international financial transactions. His experience includes secured and unsecured syndicated credit and competitive bid facilities; multicurrency, project, acquisition, equipment, lease, and leveraged lease financings; asset-based lending; loan workouts; DIP financings; and financial restructurings.
A significant portion of Tom's practice focuses on the energy, health care, and transportation industries. He has been extensively involved in matters relating to airlines and aviation, including ownership structuring, purchase, sale, and financing of commercial and corporate aircraft; airline bankruptcies; and dealing with distressed aviation assets.
Companies Tom has advised include Ambac, Bank of America, Cardinal Health, CIT, Comerica, Dow Corning, El Paso, FirstEnergy, Flyi/Independence Air, GE Capital, JPMorgan Chase, Key Bank, LUKOIL, Morgan Stanley, PNC/National City, Potash, Quicksilver Resources, Sabre, Sukhoi, and Toyota.
Tom oversees Jones Day's Banking & Finance Practice in Texas. He is past co-editor and contributing author of The Commercial Finance Guide. For 12 years, he served as co-director and speaker for the Institute on Commercial Lending sponsored by the Southern Methodist University School of Law. He has organized and delivered programs on loan and collateral documentation as well as leasing and leveraged leasing as part of in-house credit training programs for banks and financial institutions. He also speaks frequently on the ownership and operation of corporate jet aircraft, including FAA, IRS, and SEC regulatory issues.
