Chad Readler handles civil, criminal, and constitutional matters, with an emphasis on appellate litigation. Before the U.S. Supreme Court, Chad assisted in successfully representing clients in matters involving preemption, the First Amendment, the death penalty, and Congress' power under the Fourteenth Amendment.
Chad's lower court victories include vacating a $250 million punitive damages award against Prudential Securities and vacating a $44 million damages award against First American Title Insurance Company in an unfair competition case. In products liability matters, Chad successfully defended Sherwin-Williams in a dozen cases filed in the Ohio state courts. He also successfully represented R.J. Reynolds in products liability and commercial speech litigation.
Chad recently prevailed in the Ohio Supreme Court on behalf of the Cleveland Clinic, as well as in a separate matter where he defended the constitutionality of Ohio's public charter school system. Currently, Chad is litigating cases involving the False Claims Act and employment and labor law issues.
Chad was named a 2009 recipient of the American Marshall Memorial Fellowship awarded by the German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF). He traveled for three weeks in Europe, meeting with policymakers and prominent members of the business, government, political, NGO, and media communities.
Chad is a member of the Federalist Society's Litigation Practice Group. He speaks annually on the U.S. and Ohio Supreme Courts and recently spoke on appellate advocacy at the biannual Sixth Circuit conference. In addition, Chad has handled numerous pro bono matters, recently securing habeas corpus relief for a client serving a life sentence for murder.
