Darren Cottriel's practice focuses on business and commercial litigation. He represents companies and financial institutions in matters involving partnership and joint venture, contract, real estate, land development, construction, corporate trust, fiduciary, creditor's rights, fraud, and unfair competition issues. He frequently represents owners, developers, national homebuilders, design engineers, and investors in disputes involving land development projects, joint venture restructuring, and construction disputes.
Darren's experience includes litigating and trying cases in state and federal courts and private arbitrations. He also represents clients in prelitigation disputes, mediations, and settlement negotiations. Recently, he achieved a defense ruling for a national homebuilder in a several day, $22 million arbitration involving joint venture and contract claims arising out of an option/purchase transaction for a large tract of land in Northern California.
Prior to joining Jones Day, Darren was managing partner of the Orange County office of Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman LLP and chair of that firm's Orange County litigation practice. For the past five years, Darren has been selected by Los Angeles magazine and Law & Politics as a "Rising Star" for business litigation in Southern California. He is a member of the Orange County Bar Association and the Orange County Association of Business Trial Lawyers. He is author of "The Right to Hunt in the Twenty-First Century: Can the Public Trust Doctrine Save an American Tradition?" 27 Pac.L.J. 1235 (1996). Darren previously served on the board of trustees of Vanguard University and currently serves on the board of directors of Worldcare Ministries, a nonprofit corporation.
