Thomas Fortune Fay has practiced law for 43 years. He is a member of the bar in Maryland and the District of Columbia. A graduate of the University of Notre Dame and the Rutgers School of Law at Newark his practice has included more than 51 reported cases in which he has appeared as lead counsel. He is a former President of the Trial Lawyers Association of Metropolitan Washington, D. C. and in 2001 was named Trial Lawyer Of The Year by that organization for work done in establishing civil remedies for the victims of terrorism. He is a member of the American Board of Trial Advocates and is a member of the Board of No Greater Love, Inc.
Mr. Fay’s wife, Patricia J. Fay, is a CPA retired from the United States Environmental Protection Agency. They have three children. Their oldest son, Dr. Brendan J. Fay, is a dentist in practice in Wilmington, Delaware. Their younger son, Donnacha J. Fay, is a Detective Sergeant in the Fairfax County, Virginia Police Department, Major Crimes Unit. Their daughter, Caragh Glenn Fay, is a lawyer employed by Mr. Fay’s professional corporation, Fay Kaplan Law, P.A.
Mr. Fay has taught continuing legal education courses on Trial Tactics In Personal Injury Cases and Problems In Proving Damages. Mr. Fay edited a voluminous microfilm publication entitled Spiro T. Agnew - The Legal and Investigative Papers, Michael I. Glazier, Inc., Wilmington, Delaware, 1977.
The Civil Justice Foundation Award presented Mr. Fay with a Special Commendation in 2002 in Atlanta in recognition of prosecution of cases on behalf of American victims of terrorism in which in excess of $900,000,000.00 in judgments have been entered against foreign state sponsors of international terrorism. Although Mr. Fay continues to prosecute a variety of other civil cases, the majority of his time is used in the continuing pursuit of justice for American victims of foreign state sponsored terrorism.
