Clem, Alexander Murphree

John is a lifelong resident of New Hampshire, having graduated from Laconia High School in 1964 and from Dartmouth College in 1968, where he served as Director of the Ski Patrol, President of Theta Delta Chi Fraternity, Inter-fraternity Council Vice President, and member of the Undergraduate Judiciary Council and Casque and Gauntlet Senior Society.

After serving with the United States Army Security Agency in Germany, John received his Juris Doctor degree from Boston College Law School. John joined our Firm in 1974, engaging in all types of general law practice, including probate, estate planning, zoning, corporate work, and litigation. Since 1980 he has focused on real estate law, both residential and commercial. As of January 1, 2007, John has transitioned to Of Counsel status with the firm.

John and his wife, Holly, live in historic Gilmanton in a 1795 colonial which they have lovingly restored. John has been very active in town activities, having served as a member of the Planning Board for 13 years (as chairman 1983 1986), the Gilmanton Village District for 18 years (as chairman 1985 2003), and the Board of Adjustment for 9 years (as chairman 1995 2002). He is a member of the Belknap County and New Hampshire Bar Associations, Real Property, Probate and Trust Law Section of the New Hampshire Bar, and the American Land Title Association.

A former private pilot, John currently spends his summer leisure time with his family at their home on Southport Island on the Maine Coast, where John most enjoys sailing, kayaking, and hiking. He is a past Commodore of the Southport Yacht Club and serves on the Board of the Club's Educational Sailing Foundation. John’s son Trip is enrolled in a dual degree program at the University of Michigan’s Ross Graduate School of Business.
