Timothy Canney attended Providence College, where he graduated cum laude and was awarded a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science in 2008. Upon graduating, Mr. Canney attended Catholic University’s Columbus School of Law, where he earned his Juris Doctor in May, 2011. Mr. Canney's activities included serving as Note and Comment Editor for the Catholic University Law Review, and being retained as teaching assistant to the director of the Lawyering Skills Program. Mr. Canney's publications include "Tax Gross-Ups: A Practical Guide to Arguing and Calculating Awards for Adverse Tax Consequences in Discrimination Suits," 59 Cath. U. L. Rev. 1111 (2010), which won the Outstanding Legal Writing Award from the prestigious Burton Foundation, a national non-profit established to promote excellence in legal writing. Presently, Mr. Canney is pursuing his LL.M. in Taxation at the Georgetown University Law Center, and will earn his degree in May, 2013.
Mr. Canney joined JDKatz in May 2010, and is presently an associate at the firm. In this position, Mr. Canney has gained experience in a wide range of corporate and tax matters, including shareholder oppression claims, antitrust claims, labor disputes, employee misclassification investigations, and claims to pierce corporate veils. Mr. Canney's other litigation experience includes personal injury and tort claims, contract disputes, and various consumer protection actions. Mr. Canney has also assisted with appellate litigation before the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit. Mr. Canney has helped our clients resolve significant tax disputes with the IRS, and has assisted clients through the estate planning process as well. Mr. Canney's previous experience includes interning at New York Life's ERISA department in 2008, where he reviewed and revised defined-contribution plans for IRS compliance.
