James attended the University of Central Missouri and graduated Cum Laude with a Degree in Criminal Justice in 2000. Prior to his graduation, he became interested in law while studying abroad at Teikyo University, in Maastricht, the Netherlands. He put his interest in the law to work as an intern with the Missouri State Legislature.
James graduated from The University of Missouri School of Law with a Juris Doctor Degree in 2003. Later that same year James was admitted to the Arizona State Bar and began working for the Maricopa County Attorney's Office (MCAO). James worked at MCAO for five and a half years and was a senior attorney; while with MCAO James worked in the pre-trial, Juvenile Crimes, Adult Felony Divisions, and in a major crimes division, the Family Violence Bureau. During his employ with MCAO James handled hundreds of misdemeanor and felony cases. As part of the major crimes division James assisted police agencies in the valley with developing investigations, charging crimes, and conducting criminal trials for a wide array of felony offenses.
