Jim's undergraduate, law, and Master of Laws in taxation degrees are from the University of Denver. Jim is a frequent author, and has spoken nationally and internationally, on estate planning related topics. He is a Fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel, an Academician of the International Academy of Estate and Trust Law, a non-securities industry member of the Board of Arbitrators of the National Association of Securities Dealers, has taught trusts and estates at the University of Denver College of Law, and is listed in Best Lawyers in America.

Throughout his legal career of more than three decades, Jim has concentrated his practice in the areas of personal tax, estate, and closely-held business planning, primarily for entrepreneurs and professionals. Jim is a contributing author of the Colorado Estate Planning Handbook and its companion forms book, published by the Estate and Trust Section of the Colorado Bar Association.

In 1984, Jim founded the Colorado-based Consortium for Community Centered Comprehensive Child Care ("C6"), a tax-exempt corporation organized to address the needs of medically under served children in developing areas through design, construction, equipping, and administration of health care facilities appropriate to prevailing needs and circumstances. The first C6 project, Kilimanjaro Children's Hospital, situated in northern Tanzania, East Africa, was initiated shortly after C6 came into existence, and was completed several years ago. The facility treats 44,000 patients each year.

The second C6 undertaking, known as Ten Thousand Kids, is a pediatric public health outreach and primary care program for southwestern Colorado. Its first effort, a mobile medical/dental clinic, was completed in 2007 and presently serves children of the predominantly Hispanic community in Colorado's San Luis Valley. In its first 18 months of operation the clinic provided care and treatment for over 5,000 young patients. A second mobile clinic, slated for use primarily by the Ute Mountain Ute population in Colorado's Four Corners area, is on the drawing board.
