Steve concentrates his practice in the areas of environmental, natural resources and energy law, with particular emphasis on project permitting, regulatory compliance, natural resource transactions and defense of enforcement actions. He also assists clients including landowners, lenders, private utilities and energy companies, recreational resorts, and state and local government on matters involving water rights, oil and gas interests, wind energy, water and air quality, and hazardous waste matters. Steve teaches several natural resource courses as an adjunct faculty member at the University of Montana School of Law. He is a member of the Environmental and Natural Resources Sections of the Montana and Oregon bars, and the American Bar Association Section of Environment, Energy, and Resources (SEER), the Montana Petroleum Association and the Rocky Mountain Mineral Law Institute. He also is a past chair of the SEER Water Quality and Wetlands Committee, and is a fellow in the American College of Environmental Lawyers. Prior to joining Garlington, Lohn and Robinson, Steve practiced for several years with the Stoel Rives firm in Portland, Oregon. He was admitted to practice in 1989 (Oregon) and 1994 (Montana). Steve also is admitted to practice in Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribal Court.
