An honors graduate of New York Law School where he was a member of the New York Law School Review, Mr. Betz worked for the prestigious New York City law firm Cravath, Swaine & Moore while attending law school. He associated after graduation with Weil, Gotshal & Manges in New York and with several smaller firms in New York City and Long Island before opening his own law office in 1987.
From 1999 until 2001 William Betz was responsible for civil litigation as Assistant Attorney General for the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, stationed in Saipan, where he was also called upon to participate in high-profile criminal prosecutions.
Representative Litigation
In the area of matrimonial and family law, William Betz has successfully represented clients in high-profile divorces involving substantial assets. He has also had unique success in representing fathers in custody proceedings.
Mr. Betz has represented corporations in formation, contract disputes and dissolution proceedings. He has represented individuals and small, privately owned corporations and partnerships engaged in a variety of industries, including the film and videotape industry, brokerage, food services, printing, products sales and distribution, real estate, automobile sales and leasing, and dry cleaning, among others.
In addition, Mr. Betz has substantial experience in representing disaffected shareholders in private, "close" corporations seeking to protect their rights after they were frozen out of the operation of business or otherwise oppressed by the controlling shareholders.
Mr. Betz has represented clients in the federal courts seeking to protect or vindicate their rights in civil rights litigation against both the local (state and city) and federal governments.
In addition, Mr. Betz has successfully represented business executives and employees in contractual employment disputes and employment discrimination matters in the federal and state courts.
Other experience includes the representation of clients in securities arbitration before the National Association of Securities Dealers (NASD), personal injury matters, professional (medical and legal) malpractice litigation, immigration litigation, bankruptcy litigation and criminal defense.
