Robert A. Bernstein was admitted to practice law in the South Carolina courts in 1983, and has been continuously engaged in the practice of law since then. After graduating cum laude from the Honors College of the University of South Carolina, Bob graduated from the South Carolina School of Law with honors. He served on the South Carolina Law Review, and was inducted into the Order of the Coif and the Order of the Wig and Robe honor societies. Bob is also a member of Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society. He served as a judicial clerk to the Honorable Clyde H Hamilton, United States District Judge, for two years following graduation from law school. After practicing for six years with Turner, Padget, Graham & Laney, P.C. in Columbia, SC, Bob returned to Charleston in 1992. Since that time, Bob has concentrated his practice in the areas of commercial and business litigation, collections, creditors' rights, corporate law, bankruptcy and general litigation. Bob is admitted to practice before all state and federal courts in South Carolina, as well as the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit.
Bob has been actively involved with the South Carolina Bar, serving as an investigator for the ethics board and on several committees, including the ethics advisory and practice and procedures committees. Bob has served four terms on the Executive Board of the Charleston County Bar Association. He is also an active member in the Commercial Law League of America, (CLLA) an international association of attorneys and collection specialists, having served on the Executive Board of the national organization, as well as serving as Chair of the Creditors' Rights Section and the Southern Region. Bob has lectured to both the legal community and the general public on issues affecting creditors' rights. He has been listed in Who's Who in American Law, and has been a contributing author for the South Carolina Jurisprudence.
Bob is active in the community as well, and has served on the boards of his congregations, with his Masonic Lodge, and with the Mount Pleasant Rotary Club, serving as President in 2000. Bob is married to the former Mary Deann Phillips, and has two children.
