He achieved his Associate of Arts degree from Paris Junior College, His Bachelor of Arts cum laude and Master of Fine Arts from Trinity University, and his Juris Doctor from Southern Methodist University School of Law. He has worked as an office boy, fast food worker, newspaperman, security guard, repertory theater professional (playwright, actor, tech [set, lights, sound, costumes, props], box office, assistant house manager, stage manager, director), hotel front desk, auditor, clerk, and adjunct professor.
He has served as a Nation Officer (Chief, Medicine Man) with the YMCA Indian Guides, Princesses, Braves, and Maidens. He is a charter member of both Council 9884 and the Pope Paul VI Assembly of the Knights of Columbus.
He is very much the family man. He married his high-school sweetheart, the former Cynthia Mussetter, in 2001, both of them having been through other marriages. He has one son and two stepchildren from his prior marriage, all three married and living in Texas; he is very grateful that those stepchildren and their children chose to continue to treat him as family even after the divorce. Cynthia brought him three new stepchildren, two of whom live in Texas and one of whom has a child. He and Cynthia together are godparents to two children.
