Mr. Bartels works with public (governmental), tax-exempt, and private sector clients on employee benefit plan issues. He advises clients on health and welfare plans, cafeteria plans, fringe benefits, defined benefit pension plans, § 401(k) plans, § 403(b) plans, § 457(b) plans, executive compensation, and deferred compensation plans under Code § 409A. Mr. Bartels counsels clients on benefit plan design and administration issues and drafts plan documents, amendments, and summary plan descriptions. He assists clients with issues relating to the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974, as amended ("ERISA"). Since 2010, Mr. Bartels has worked closely with clients on questions regarding the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, as amended, and it’s implementing regulations. Mr. Bartels also counsels clients on employee benefit issues in the context of mergers, acquisitions, and divestitures.
As a member of the Firm's Corporate Practice Group, Mr. Bartels works with clients to negotiate and draft contracts, structure corporate transactions, perform due diligence, and draft transaction documents.
Mr. Bartels enjoys traveling, reading (particularly essays, short stories, and biographies), playing with his dog, spending time with family and friends, watching drum and bugle corps performances, and volunteering. He is a member of the Friends of NAP (Nebraska AIDS Project).
