La Toya Barrett has been helping victims of employment discrimination since 2007. She is a recent graduate of the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law and a graduate cum laude from John Jay College of Criminal Justice.
Throughout her law school career, La Toya worked as an advocate on behalf of individuals’ rights. Through the Courtroom Advocates Project, she trained to assist victims of domestic violence in obtaining child support and orders of protection. As a legal intern for the world renowned Innocence Project, La Toya advocated on behalf of wrongfully convicted individuals who sought to reclaim their freedom. She was instrumental in identifying, preserving and obtaining exculpatory evidence and consent to DNA testing necessary for their defense.
Through her work at employment and labor firms in New York City, La Toya assisted in representing victims of discrimination of various types. In the area of women’s rights, La Toya helped victims of sexual harassment and pregnancy discrimination pursue claims with the State Division of Human Rights and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. She also assisted in advocating on behalf of victims of race, age and religious discrimination in the workplace as well as victims of retaliation.
