Mr. Armstrong is known for his commitment to environmental protection and conservation. He has served on the board of Elachee Nature Science Center since 1982. He is also an active member of First United Methodist Church of Gainesville.
After attending Davidson College and earning his law degree from Mercer University in 1964, Mr. Armstrong practiced law in Milledgeville, Georgia, for two years and served three years as an officer in the U.S. Navy. In 2003, he achieved a certificate in environmental ethics at the University of Georgia. He has practiced law in the Gainesville-Hall County area since 1969. He joined Stewart Melvin & Frost in 1979.
